Contract vs Full-Time IT Jobs in the US: How to Decide

Most IT professionals in the US will weigh contract against full-time at some point – especially if you work with staffing agencies. Neither is universally better. Here is an honest breakdown to help you decide.

What each actually means

Full-time (permanent): You are an employee of the company you work at. Salary, benefits, and usually more stability.

W2 contract: You are employed by a staffing agency and work at their client. You get a W2, often an hourly rate, and sometimes benefits through the agency.

Corp-to-corp (C2C): You work through your own corporation or a third party’s. Higher rates, but you handle your own taxes, insurance, and compliance.

The real tradeoffs

Pay

Contract rates are usually higher per hour than the equivalent salary divided by hours. The gap exists partly to cover benefits and unpaid bench time between contracts.

Stability

Contracts end. Budgets get cut, projects wrap. Good agencies line up your next placement before the current one ends, but the risk is real. Full-time roles offer more predictability, though layoffs happen there too.

Benefits

Health insurance, 401(k) matching, and paid time off are typically richer in full-time roles. Many staffing agencies now offer solid benefits on W2 contracts – ask for specifics, not promises.

Growth

Contracting exposes you to more stacks, industries, and teams in less time. Full-time roles tend to offer deeper growth inside one organization and clearer promotion paths.

Visa considerations

If you are on OPT, CPT, or an H1B, contracting through an established agency is often the fastest route into the US market and can lead to H1B sponsorship or a full-time conversion at the client. If that is your situation, ask upfront about the agency’s immigration support and track record.

Questions to ask before signing with an agency

  • Is this W2 or C2C, and what are the exact benefits on W2?
  • What happens when the contract ends – do you market my profile actively?
  • Who is the end client, and can I talk to the account manager?
  • What is the conversion path to full-time at this client, if any?
  • For H1B candidates: who handles filings, and what is your approval history?

The short version

Early in your US career, or on a visa, a W2 contract through a reputable agency is often the practical choice – faster placement, immigration support, and market exposure. Once you have options, weigh the rate against benefits, stability, and where you want to be in three years.
